30
Release Notes for Grml 2011.05 - codename <a
31 href="/faq/#releasename">Just Mari

35
Grml is a bootable live system (Live-CD) based on Debian. It
36 includes a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for system
37 administrators and users of texttools. Grml provides automatic hardware
38 detection. Grml is the perfect rescue system, but you can also use it for
39 analyzing systems/networks or as a working environment. It is not
40 necessary to install anything to a harddisk; you don't even need a
41 harddisk to run it. Due to on-the-fly decompression Grml includes about
42 2 GB of software and documentation on the live system.

48
New Linux kernel version based on 2.6.38.7

50
Initramfs is now XZ compressed (smaller)

52
/run has been introduced

56
Special new features:

60
dns= bootoption allows for specifying static nameservers.

62
grml-feedback, a commandline application for providing feedback to the Grml Team via feedback.grml.org.

64
Easier syntax for grml-quickconfig menu files, existing menu files are still valid.

67 grml2iso small ISOs: grml2iso can now output small ISOs (~ 20MB) with only kernel and initrd. These are meant to be used with fetch=.
72
Important Changes

75
iPXE has replaced gPXE.

76
Core scripts previously found in grml-scripts are now shipped as grml-scripts-core to facilitate reuse on plain Debian systems.

77
Due to popular demand, the ratpoison window manager is included once again.

78
grml-debootstrap adds the security repository for stable and testing installations.

79
grml-quickconfig will be executed on grml-small.

80
More complicated disk configurations (LVM and SW-RAID, though not stacked on each other) are supported when booting Grml via grml-rescueboot or with the findiso= and live-media= bootoptions.

86
Based on vanilla kernel 2.6.38.7 including <a
87 href="/kernel/">several patches and additional modules:

90 aufs iscsitarget ndiswrapper openafs speakup sysprof
91 tp-smapi virtualbox-ose-guest xtables-addons
94
Visit grml.org/kernel/ for more details
95 regarding Grml's kernel. (Note that lzma and squashfs are now part
96 of the mainline kernel.)

100
Fixed several bugs and issues reported in the
101 bug tracking system.
