37
This release brings a downsizing and cleanup: one flavour, two architectures.
38 The new, smaller flavour has a 350MB ISO size target, while still
39 delivering over 1.1GB of open source software relevant for system
46
EFI Boot support from CD-ROM and USB keys (amd64 only)

47
mDNS support (try ping grml.local with libnss-mdns and avahi-daemon
48 or similar enabled on your host)

49
NFS Client support and d-bus start automatically

50
grml-debootstrap, the tool of choice to install Debian,
51 can now directly build virtual machine images.

52
grml-live, our build tool, was enhanced with new features to
53 better integrate with Jenkins.
54 This release, as well as the current daily images
55 are built from within Jenkins!

58
Important Changes

61
Z-Shell configuration has been cleaned up. Quite a few functions
62 have been removed
63 from the default configuration.

64
X11 environment has been downsized as well. The window manager is
65 now fluxbox. idesk has been removed, all available software is now
66 reachable from the fluxbox menu.

67
The accessibility support now consists of shipping standard speakup
68 and enabling sound during boot. A new beep sequence (4 tones) is sounded
69 just before the quickconfig menu starts. (The boot options have been
71
xterm now uses the Terminus font, like the VT consoles.

72
Virtual Machines automatically get the "noprompt" behaviour.

73
Ancient config files and examples have been removed from grml-etc(-core).

74
Ancient scripts have been removed from grml-scripts(-core).

76
Anonymous stats are collected during boot up. This includes: Grml release name,
77 boot media type (local or remote), a random string, used boot option keys
78 (no values) and if your CPU is 64bit-capable. You can turn this off with the
79 nostats boot option.

82
Bits & bolts

85
Modem support has been removed from grml-network

86
VT consoles are driven by grml-runtty, our homegrown login and getty
87 replacement for Live CDs.

88
Netboot scenarios should no longer use the "nodhcp" boot option.

89
grml2hd is no longer in PATH to discourage its use even further.
90 The related boot options have been removed.

91
grml2usb: compat for releases < 2009.05, grub1 and lilo support
92 have been removed.

93
Release builds are now built from Debian's testing distribution, instead of unstable.

94
Linux kernel is based on 3.1.4. No additional modules are shipped.

95
Fixed several bugs from the bug tracking system.

100
Details about shipped packages and their versions on Grml are
101 available at the Debian section. Visit

111
Packages are taken from Debian testing, 11th of December
112 2011. 1745 packages have been removed, and these new packages
113 have been added (plus dependencies):

115 afflib-tools aoetool atftp bacula-sd efibootmgr
116 grub-efi-amd64-bin ia32-libs imvirt ipxe mcollective
117 mtx multiarch-support netcat-openbsd python2.7 sipcalc
121
These Grml packages have been removed/replaced:

124 grml-debugtools grml-docs grml-files grml-files64

130
Known issues

132
iSCSI Target support is currently in limbo, as
133 the user land tools for the new in-kernel iSCSI target are not yet
134 in Debian unstable/testing and shipping the old iscsitarget modules
135 in binary form appears to be almost impossible with the new DKMS packaging.
136 As a workaround you may consider using Ata Over Ethernet with vblade.
139
dns bootoption does not work as expected. See <a
140 href="http://bts.grml.org/grml/issue1099">issue1099 for details.
