32
Release Notes for Grml 2011.05-rc1 - codename <a
33 href="/faq/#releasename">Just Mari

35
Notice: Grml 2011.05-rc1 is a RELEASE CANDIDATE and not
36 yet the stable release!

40
Grml is a bootable live system (Live-CD) based on Debian. It
41 includes a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for system
42 administrators and users of texttools. Grml provides automatic hardware
43 detection. Grml is the perfect rescue system, but you can also use it for
44 analyzing systems/networks or as a working environment. It is not
45 necessary to install anything to a harddisk; you don't even need a
46 harddisk to run it. Due to on-the-fly decompression Grml includes about
47 2 GB of software and documentation on the live system.

53
New Linux kernel version based on 2.6.38.6

55
Initramfs is now XZ compressed (smaller)

57
/run has been introduced

61
Special new features:

65
dns= bootoption allows for specifying static nameservers.

67
grml-feedback, a commandline application for providing feedback to the Grml Team via feedback.grml.org.

69
Easier syntax for grml-quickconfig menu files, existing menu files are still valid.

72 grml2iso small ISOs: grml2iso can now output small ISOs (~ 20MB) with only kernel and initrd. These are meant to be used with fetch=.
77
Important Changes

80
iPXE has replaced gPXE.

81
Core scripts previously found in grml-scripts are now shipped as grml-scripts-core to facilitate reuse on plain Debian systems.

82
Due to popular demand, the ratpoison window manager is included once again.

83
grml-debootstrap adds the security repository for stable and testing installations.

84
grml-quickconfig will be executed on grml-small.

85
More complicated disk configurations (LVM and SW-RAID, though not stacked on each other) are supported when booting Grml via grml-rescueboot or with the findiso= and live-media= bootoptions.

91
Based on vanilla kernel 2.6.38.6 including <a
92 href="/kernel/">several patches and additional modules:

95 aufs iscsitarget ndiswrapper openafs speakup sysprof
96 tp-smapi virtualbox-ose-guest xtables-addons
99
Visit grml.org/kernel/ for more details
100 regarding Grml's kernel. (Note that lzma and squashfs are now part
101 of the mainline kernel.)

105
Fixed several bugs and issues reported in the
106 bug tracking system.
